Decorating With Tweed

31 October, 2022

Tweed and tartan fabrics make for amazing soft furnishings. A well designed room with elements of tweed in it can be a fantastic space, however, tweed is a fabric that can be a little tricky to get just right. Luckily we've put together a few hints and tips to help you realise your tweed vision. Before you know it you'll have a warm and cosy country home in time for the colder months.

Order Tweed Fabric Samples

This seems like a simple tip, but it's vitally important. All fabrics can look slightly different in your home when compared to on your screen. Tweed is a prime example of this, with a whole host of hues, shades and patterns available - tweed fabrics must be seen in situ before deciding on which one is perfect for your home.

In addition to this, the benefit of ordering a tweed fabric sample is that you get the opportunity to feel it! If you're opting for a dramatic set of tweed curtains or tweed roman blinds, the feel isn't hugely important. However, if you're going to be including a cushion or two made from the same fabric, ordering a sample to get a feel for how tactile it is will be important. Nobody likes a scratchy cushion!

Embrace Your Ready Made Colour Palette

One potential mistake often made by those decorating with tweed is sticking ostensibly to the dominant colour of the tweed. This may work in some spaces, but can often leave your home looking monotonal and drab. A tweed pattern has a multitude of colour within it.

Embrace this!

Have some fun and really look to liven up your tweed space with a splash of colour here and there. If you're feeling bold and brave you may want to consider using complimenting colours. A colour wheel is a great tool to use if you opt for complementing colours. Simply use the wheel and pick the colour directly opposite your dominant colour to discover the complimentary colours. A darker blue goes fantastically well with browns, if you're using traditional tweed colours - blues are going to be your friend when it comes to livening up your space.

Tweed Is Timeless

All too often, we can think of tweed as a more traditional fabric, but the reality is that tweed is a timeless fabric. This means if you elect to use tweed in your home, it's going to match pretty much any decor. Obviously, going all in with a tweed styling is best suited to a more country or rustic decor - and it has some great results.

However, tweed can be just as effectively used in a whole variety of settings. Again, be brave, embrace tweed and you will be surprised about what you can achieve. For those with a more modern interior, there's a whole host of less traditional tweed styles which can be used to great effect. Equally, contrasting more traditional tweed with a more modern space is a fantastic way of adding some life and intrigue to your space.
