Colour Focus - Yellows

31 August, 2022

Yellows can be a daunting colour to use when decorating, over use them and it can make the space a little busy and the eye will struggle to set on the nuances you've carefully planned out. However, correctly employed yellows can enhance a space - there's a reason yellows have been increasing in popularity over the past few years.

Yellows Invite The Outdoors Inside

Think yellows and we think warm, inviting, and sunny, as the sun streams in through your window - it will be complemented by yellow accents and walls in your space. This is fantastic as we come out of summer, the sun gets lower in the sky and appears brighter. This has the effect of intensifying the yellows in your space.

Using yellow soft furnishings in your space is a great way of welcoming the brightness of your sun into your space and helps to create a spacious, warm ambiance in your home. This is especially true of smaller spaces, in fact yellows work exceptionally well to open up spaces with limited room and give them a much larger feel.

Using Yellow In Retro and Contemporary Spaces

A truly versatile shade, yellows are equally at home in ultra modern spaces, country homes or used in retro decor.

Combining a bright vibrant yellow hue with muted greys is a popular choice at the moment, this works especially well with geometrics, the greys offset the vibrancy of the yellow and bring calm to the space. The yellows add splashes of colour, ideal for a modern livable space. The same effect can be achieved with yellow and white, for an even more modern feel - though with this combination a sparing use of yellow is advisable.

Creating a space which has prominent browns and deep reds with a select use of muted yellows gives off decidedly mid-century modern vibes. Really lean into the retro vibes and combine with rounded geometrics. Orla Kiely designs are a fantastic example of how to masterfully bring retro yellow designs into the 21st century.

Using Yellow Wallpapers

As with yellow soft furnishings, yellow wallpapers are incredibly versatile. From subtle sophistication to eye drawing feature walls there's a yellow that is perfect for your space. Inject colour into your home and instantly create a sense of freshness - the same rules apply which apply to your soft furnishings. That is, use sparingly, utilise to emphasise spaciousness within a room; and combine with greys and grey for a modern, chic look.

We've not touched on maximalism yet, patterned yellow wallpapers are a staple of maximalist spaces. They're busy and fun but can also be toned down so as not to shout too loud.

Yellow wallpapers are right on trend and have long shrugged off the mantle of a dated colour, certainly a shade worth considering for your space.
