Are Thermal Curtains Effective?

14 October, 2022

With heating bills increasing and the next price cap review in January potentially leading to even higher energy bills, it's a smart move to look at ways of reducing your overall bills. Step forward thermal curtains! On average a house will lose over 30% of its heat through the windows. Curtains lined with thermal material could be a great way of keeping those bills down and sprucing up your decor at the same time.

What Are Thermal Curtains?

In short, thermal curtains are curtains that have a lining created out of an insulating thermal material. The thermal lining we use is a luxury, thick cotton and polyester blend supplemented with a thin foam layer to help support its thermal properties. If you're interested, you can learn a little more about other curtain linings.

The foam makes up most of the thermal aspects of the curtain lining whereas the cotton blend is there to protect the foam layer from wear, tear and degradation from the sun.

Thermal curtains do suffer from somewhat poor branding. There is an (incorrect) opinion that thermal curtains are drab, boring or plain. This is simply not true, thermal lining can be applied to any one of our 30,000+ made to measure curtain fabrics, giving you an almost unlimited choice of what thermal curtains are just right for your decor.

How Do Thermal Curtains Work?

It's incorrect to say that thermal curtains actively heat up a room. Thermal curtains do not give off any heat. Instead, they work by creating a barrier between the cold air by the windows and the warm air within the room. In essence, they insulate the coldest points of the room limiting the amount of heat transference.

It is estimated that thermal curtains could reduce heat loss from your home as a whole by a huge 25%. That translates into quite some savings on your heating bills during the colder months. To get the most out of your thermal curtains when the temperature drops, keep them open during the day. Keeping your curtains open during the hours of light allows the sun to warm up your room. When it is dusk, the heat transferrence will begin to work the other way so close your curtains and trap that warm air in your home.

Can You Use Thermal Curtains During The Summer?

Absolutely! As thermal curtains are designed to insulate using them in the warmer summer months is a fantastic way to keep the mercury down in your home when the sun is out. In this instance, they would work the opposite to how they work during autumn and winter. This insulating thermal lining keeps the cooler air in your home and the warmer air outside, reducing the amount of heat transferred through your windows by over 30%.

This settles the debate as to whether you should keep your windows and curtains closed when it is hot in order to keep your house cool!
